SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/ja-too-expensive
In Japanese, how do you say 'That's too expensive for me'?
Takasugimasu. (高すぎます。)
- Oishii desu. (おいしいです。)
- Takasugimasu. (高すぎます。) ✔
- Kiree desu ne. (きれいですね。)
Why: Takai means expensive, and sugimasu adds 'too much'. The wrong choices are 'It's delicious' and 'It's beautiful'.
Huh, didn't know that: Tam says it in NHK's skit when the hair dryer costs 9,900 yen.
That souvenir was takai, tall in price and tall on the shelf.
