SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/scuba-no-earplugs-or-goggles
Why should scuba divers never wear earplugs or swim goggles?
They trap air you cannot equalize, which can cause injury.
- They fog up too quickly
- They are against the law
- They trap air you cannot equalize ✔
Why: Earplugs seal off air in your ear canal, and goggles do not cover your nose so you cannot breathe into them. As pressure rises, that trapped air squeezes and can hurt your ears, face and eyes.
Huh, didn't know that: A dive mask covers your nose so you can exhale into it to equalize and avoid mask squeeze.
Goggles are great for pools, but under pressure they just can't cope.
