What is a certificate revocation list (CRL)?
A signed list of revoked certificates, identified by serial number.
- A list of trusted root certificates
- A list of users allowed to request certificates
- A signed, time-stamped list of revoked certificates ✔
Why: If a certificate is stolen or issued by mistake, the CA revokes it and publishes the serial number in a CRL. Clients check the list before trusting a certificate.
Huh, didn't know that: RFC 5280 says each revoked certificate is identified in a CRL by its certificate serial number.
My identity got stolen. They returned it with a note: "No thanks."
