SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/tech-http-301-permanent
What does HTTP status 301 indicate?
It indicates a permanent move to a new URI.
- A temporary server overload
- A missing representation
- A permanent new URI ✔
Why: A 301 response says the target resource has been assigned a new permanent URI. Clients can use the new location for future references.
Huh, didn't know that: The response normally supplies the preferred new URI in a Location header field.
Status 301 moved and remembered to leave a forwarding address.
