SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/tech-network-throughput-actual
What does network throughput measure?
Throughput measures data successfully transmitted in a given time.
- Successfully transmitted data over time ✔
- The maximum theoretical transfer rate
- Only the first packet's delay
Why: Throughput is the rate actually achieved by successful data transfer. Congestion, loss, protocol overhead, and hardware limits often keep it below the connection's theoretical bandwidth.
Huh, didn't know that: Comparing throughput with bandwidth helps show how efficiently a link is being used.
Throughput finished the job while bandwidth discussed its potential.
