SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/base-pitch-clock-violation
In MLB, what happens when a pitcher does not start his pitch before the pitch clock runs out?
An automatic ball is added to the count.
- An automatic ball ✔
- An automatic strike
- The pitcher is removed
Why: Pitchers who violate the timer are charged an automatic ball. Batters who are not in the box and ready by the 8 second mark are charged an automatic strike.
Huh, didn't know that: Umpires can give extra time in special cases, like a catcher who just ran the bases and needs his gear.
Why did the pitcher stare at the clock? He was trying to kill time.
