Domain names like .com are registered through which kind of company?

An ICANN-accredited registrar (or its reseller).

  1. Your state Secretary of State
  2. An ICANN-accredited registrar ✔
  3. The USPTO

Why: ICANN accredits registrars to sell generic top-level domain names, and there are more than two thousand of them. Registering your business with the state does not reserve the matching domain name.

Huh, didn't know that: ICANN recommends dealing directly with an accredited registrar rather than a company that resells names.
