SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/comm-thunderstorm-mature-stage
Which stage of a thunderstorm's life is the most violent?
The mature stage.
- Cumulus stage
- Mature stage ✔
- Dissipating stage
Why: In the mature stage, rain or hail is too heavy for the cloud to support and begins to fall, creating downdrafts beside the updrafts. Violent turbulence, hail and strong surface winds all exist in and near the cloud.
Huh, didn't know that: Severe thunderstorms can reach 50,000 to 60,000 feet, so you can't climb over one in a light airplane.
What does a cloud wear under his raincoat? Thunderwear!
