SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/elec-island-optional
In the 2023 NEC, what is true about receptacles for kitchen islands and peninsulas?
Island receptacles are optional, but provisions for a future one are required.
- Optional, but provisions to add one are required ✔
- Required every 24 inches
- Not permitted on islands
Why: The 2023 NEC made island and peninsula receptacles optional. If none is installed, provisions must be made at the island so a receptacle can be added later.
Huh, didn't know that: Along a kitchen countertop wall, no point may be more than 24 inches from a receptacle outlet.
Why did the kitchen island feel left out? Nobody ever plugged into it.
