SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/fr-entree
A museum door in France has a sign saying ENTRÉE. What does it mean?
Entrée means entrance, the way in.
- Exit
- Open
- Entrance ✔
Why: Entrée on a sign means way in. Exit is sortie and open is ouvert. Entrée libre means free admission at a museum, or no obligation to buy in a shop.
Huh, didn't know that: On a French menu, l'entrée is the starter, not the main course as on many US menus.
Why did the chef make a grand entrance? He was serving the entrée.
