SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hunt-muzzleloader-half-cock
Is it safe to walk around with a primed muzzleloader on half cock?
No. A bump or snag could release the hammer.
- Yes, half cock locks the trigger completely
- No, a bump could release the hammer ✔
- Yes, but only on a flintlock
Why: Half cock does lock the trigger, but the hammer can still be bumped or snagged. If it falls on a primed gun, the gun can fire. Hunter education says never walk around primed and on half cock.
Huh, didn't know that: On a flintlock, the frizzen closes over the priming pan and gives the flint a surface to strike.
Why did the flintlock love history class? It was full of old flames.
