SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/weld-tight-fit-less-heat
Why does a tight-fitting seam help limit warping on thin metal?
It needs less filler, so less heat goes in.
- It needs less filler, so less heat goes in ✔
- It lets you skip tack welds entirely
- It makes the metal cool faster
Why: Warping comes from heat and shrinking as the weld cools. A tight fit-up and small tacks keep the heat input low.
Huh, didn't know that: Miller says shrinking can never be fully eliminated, because it happens at the atomic level as metal heats and cools.
