SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/climb-dynamic-vs-static
Which rope type is designed to stretch and catch lead falls?
Dynamic rope. Static rope barely stretches.
- Static rope
- Dynamic rope ✔
- Accessory cord
Why: Dynamic ropes stretch to soak up the force of a fall. Static ropes stretch very little and are made for rappelling and hauling, not for catching falls.
Huh, didn't know that: The UIAA has set safety standards for dynamic climbing ropes since 1961.
Why is the dynamic rope so easygoing? It can stretch to fit any plan.
