How is belaying a lead climber different from belaying a top rope climber?
On lead you mostly give out slack; on top rope you take it in.
- Lead: give slack. Top rope: take it in. ✔
- There is no difference at all
- On lead, stand far from the wall
Why: On top rope, the rope runs through an anchor above, so the belayer pulls in slack as the climber rises. A leader clips the rope to protection on the way up and needs just enough slack to move and clip.
Huh, didn't know that: A lead belayer also takes a bigger pull when the leader falls and is often lifted off the ground.
Lead belayers are generous. They're always giving.
